SMS Communication Delays

Post by alarmguy »

I have had the Envisalink3 system installed on a DSC 1864 for a few years now ( I am a retired alarm company owner/installer) but lately the delay between the event and the SMS message has become severe, 2 hours+. When the event eventually shows on SMS it has a proper time stamp of the actual event so the Envisalink is communicating in a timely manner. I added a second contact, direct to email and it works at normal speed, usually reporting in under a minute. I have tested the "SMS via email" for Telus from a desktop PC and it works fine. I have creates other SMS contacts using alternate Telus formats (number@msg.telus.com and number@text.telus.com) but all have the same terrible delay. Somewhere in the workings of Eyez-On it seems to add huge delays. Sometimes the messages don't arrive at all. Is anybody else having issues like this? Is there a fix?

Having the same issue as well with Telus, this happened once before and was related to Telus blocking/delaying alerts form eyezon alert server due to a user abuse. Could this be the case again?

Cut and Paste from old issue. Not sure how to link back to old post.

""Telus is blocking our Alerts0 server due to the actions of one user that has already been warned.

That user has turned zone follower alerting on for his exit zones and set up his mobile phone as a contact so he's being blocked for abuse (50 SMS an hour) by Telus, and the main reporting server is also being blocked periodically.

We have suspended the user for the time being. Hopefully that fixes the problem.""

Pretty sure this is the case again (Blocked Server) as I logged to add a new contact and verify PIN SMS is being delayed on Telus only. Temporary work around is added e-mail (Gmail) contact and created e-mail rule to auto forward to ****@text.telus.

Thanks for the update. I was in my Eyez-on profile yesterday and added/deleted contacts to as a method of determining which part of the chain was causing the delay. All my "send pin" and verifies went without delay.

I received a text this morning at about 4:00 for an opening that took place yesterday morning at 9:00. It say somewhere for 19 hours. Not exactly a useful service for monitoring alarm events.

I do like your work-around! I'll give it a try

Yes, Telus is throttling all of our alerting servers due to abuse and all our requests to Telus have gone unanswered. We have over 10,000 Telus customers and the amount of traffic they are generating to the Telus SMS gateways is causing Telus to tag the traffic as SPAM.

We are doing out best to try and solve this but at this time there is no work around except to send the alerts to another email server and forward the message to your phone (as mentioned by a previous poster).

The throttling is by server so by redirecting the message to another server gets around their anti-SPAM provisions.

Hmm, I can kind of see why they would do it, especially if EVL users are abusing the service by reporting every time a zone changes state. It creates a huge amount of traffic on Telus's SMS system.
At any rate, I set up the prescribed workaround using an alternate mail server and reporting is back up to full speed, about a 20 second delay.

Thanks to all who provided input

Yes, Telus is throttling all E2SMS traffic for the last week or so. If you have an Android phone use your notifications instead. iPhone users will need to wait until next week.
