Board Troubleshoot

Post by jlatham »

I have an Envisalink 3 that's performed exactly the way I needed it to for the past 2 years with my Vista 20P. I was away a couple of weeks ago and received a network supervision fault. When I got home, the keypad was showing the 6F fault and beeping away.

I popped open the panel to look at the LEDs and the Envisalink had no LEDs on and was burning hot. I disconnected the power to my whole security system and disconnected the battery to let everything cool down. I removed the Envisalink board, did a visual inspection, made sure my panel powered up OK without it, powered back down, reinstalled it, and powered my system back up.

I now have cleared the 6F and get both the KEYB and OPER lights flashing (i.e. the board's there and the panel sees it, but no network connection). I tested the cable by plugging my computer in down there so I can see that the network cable is alive.

I tried the factory reset procedure (http://forum.eyez-on.com/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=365). Same behavior after the factory reset.

Anything else I can try?

It sounds like your Envisalink took a lightning hit on the Ethernet side.

If you are sure about the cable, and you are sure the issue isn't the port on the router, then I'd say the NIC is fried.

Thanks. I continued messing with it last night and figured out that one of my troubleshoot steps I didn't mention previously was making the situation worse...
I had moved the Ethernet line to a different port to try to see if maybe my old hub had died... and the switch I moved the line to didn't support auto-negotiating down to 10 Mbps. That's why the laptop worked but the Envisalink didn't.

When I moved it back to my old as dirt hub, the link light on the Envisalink has come on. The link light on the hub side gives a flash every 8 seconds or so (it's usually solid if the connection's good), so I think the Envisalink is dutifully sending out its DHCP requests and something is happening between the request and the response coming back... my router's not showing any traffic from the Envisalink's MAC address. I'm going to bust out Wireshark and see if I can figure out what's going on.

As I've been moving the board around, I also noticed that sometimes while handling it the activity light flashes as if it finally has received a response. I am suspecting a cracked or otherwise intermittent solder joint somewhere.

In all likelihood, I am still going to need to be ordering a new board, but I'll let you know what I find.

On the EVL3 the LINK LED should be solid and never flash. Any flashing would be an indication of an Ethernet problem of some sort. The ACT LED will flash whenever incoming packets are received. The LINK LED will light whenever the RX carrier (sync pulse) is detected.
