New user problem - probably covered elsewhere but I couldn't find it

I have just added an Evisalink4 to my Honeywell 20P system.
The system is pretty basic; two keypads, a couple of hardwired sensors and a bell. It was installed by .. someone .. at the request of the previous owner. Personally, I'd have picked a DSC (which I have experience with), as I have come to dislike everything about this system, but thousands of other happy users can't all be wrong, and the gear was here, so why not.
Anyway, after going through the Envisalink setup, everything seemed to work as expected. Five green LEDs, the fifth flickering.
I logged on to the web interface of the E4 and was confronted by the Keypad address section. Partition 1 was used by 18. All others were blank. I checked my keypads and found them to be 13 and 17. I entered 17 into Partition 2 and clicked modify. I entered 13 into partition 3 and clicked modify. The web page immediately disappeared and I was no longer able to connect to the E4 web interface.
Hmmm...
Logged into my account and it told me that the E4 was ONLINE but that "*29 programming was incomplete". I have no idea what that is, but a search of the forum told me to type 4112 800 *291 *0** *99. I did so, having NO idea what this did or what it meant. However, the web page seemed happy. The page then informed me that there was newer firmware. I said "sure, update".
However, I was still unable to access the E4 local web page.
Back to the Eyezon account page. Device now OFFLINE.
And at the E4 itself, sure enough, the online LED is off.
However, the router says it's connected and there is a link light on the switch. PINGS fail though.
At this point, I'm confused.
I understand that it's only been a few minutes, but I am very close to tossing everything, including the E4, and buying a DSC setup. All that's holding me back is the scorn I'd get from my wife if I did.
Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated.
