Thanks for the reply GrandWizard,
I understand the jumper to disable the on-board IP communicator but am confused about shadowing. What do you mean shadowing will not work with the on-board IP communicator? What is the shadowing option used for then? What if I wanted to do AlarmNet monitoring in the future. I does not matter either way for me right now as I am not using the on-board IP communicator but would like to understand the setup.

Shadowing is for when you have another IP/GSM/LRR communicator on the ECP bus and you want the Envisalink to simply watch, or shadow, the other communicator without actively talking to the panel. This is required as most Vista panels cannot have more than one external communicator.

The 21ip is different in that the onboard IP communicator doesn't sit on the ECP bus, it talks directly to the microprocessor on the board. Therefore the Envisalink cannot shadow the onboard communicator as it can't "see" any of its communications.

Ah okay, so just for clarity and so I can fully understand what is going on.

- If I did do AlarmNet monitoring with the on-board IP communicator on the 21iP panel I would not be able to use the EnvisaLink, is this correct?

- On panels with external IP/GSM communicators that are connected to the ECP bus does the EnvisaLink shadowing mode just watch the traffic on the bus that is going between the alarm and the IP/GSM communicator module? When the EnvisaLink needs to send data to disarm or other commands does the EnvisaLink just use the same address as the IP/GSM communicator so the panel thinks the commands are coming from the IP/GSM communicator?

You would no be able to use it for alerts, just control. Why would you want to use AlarmNet? The Envisalink is a complete IP communicator with greater redundancy than anything Honeywell has. Just sayin'.

The Envisalink is two products in one: a keypad, and an IP communicator. Control is done from the Keypad side, and alerts come from the communicator side. Shadowing just tells the Envisalink to simply watch communicator traffic instead of requesting it. The Envisalink is remains an active keypad on the system with shadowing enabled.
